Connectors for USB 3.0

As we all very well know that CES has a wide range of mind boggling gizmos kept for demonstration. This year one such gadget was tagged under connectors. Most of us just can’t help thinking of faster transfer rates than our regular USB 2.0.Keeping upto the expectations, the connectors for USB 3.0 were demonstrated.

These new connectors retain the compatibility for the older USB 1.1 and USB 2.0.In fact, these connectors are deeper than the pins of USB 1.1 and USB 2.0, even though the difference in the depth appers to be small.

The USB 3.0 will be tag-named as “SuperSpeed USB” as stated by USB-IF.With a theoretical transfer rate of 4.7Gbps,it is expected to offer ten times the transfer rate of USB 2.0.With the final specifications expected to be ready by the first half of 2008, the peripherals are not expected before the latter half of 2009.

With eSATA already having a transfer rate of 3Gbps,the launch of USB 3.0 along with it would mean serious trouble for FIREWIRE.Although Firewire has its own advantages over USB,predicting the battle of the next generation Data-Transfer kings is a very tough job. Also Firewire announcing the S3200 with a transfer speed of 3.2Gbps and cause an off-set.With the new firewire S3200 expected to ship in soon the battle can tilt in any way.
