Step-by-Step Guide to Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 with RedSn0w 0.9.7b6

The Dev team has released RedSn0w beta 6 which fixes a couple of old issues such as Bluetooth functionality and Skype in the JailBroken iDevice. The most important to the users is the fact that this Jailbreak is actually untethered. Unfortunately in order for us to have an untethered Jailbreak your iDevice must have 4.2B3 SHSH files on file with Cydia. Keep in mind this tutorial is only for Mac users. I had a friend test this out on a virtual machine running Leopard and it did not work so do not waste your time trying that method.

This version of RedSn0w is limited to iPhone4, iPad, and iPod touch 4G. If you need an Unlock then I suggest you to stay away from this version of Redsn0w and wait for The PwnageTool to be updated.

The files you need are (Just Select and Download the proper file from the links below) :

Only those enrolled in the iPhone Developer Program have legitimate access to that 4.2b3 IPSW. Please do not pirate any Files!

Follow the step-by-step directions:

Place all the items you have downloaded on your desktop for ease.

Run Redsn0w and click browse

On the left pane click desktop and select the 4.2.1 IPSW from the right pane and click next.

Now if you had your 4.2 b3 SHSH files on file with Cydia Check Jailbreak Monte (untether) and select the 4.2 b3 IPSW when the window opens. If you dont have 4.2 b3 SHSH saved then just click next and your device will Jailbreak but will be Tethered.

Read the directions that Redsn0w is giving you. Power off your device and make sure it is plugged in to your computer.

Once this step is completed the jailbreak process will start and may take a while. Be patient and just wait! You will see files install on your iDevice.

Once it is finished Redsn0w will say “Done”

Then just wait till your iDevice boots up. It may take a few minutes..

Yeah unfortunately guys it is only for Mac but the good news is that @musclenerd is working on a version that will work with 4.1 shsh and not the beta 4.2b3. Also he plans to release the next beta for windows so make sure to check back here soon for an update

Hi, It did work but Cydia won´t open. It just shows a white Icon. Thanks.

This hard locks up my Mac when the jail break Monte starts. I’ve tried this on my iPad and 3GS as well as other macs. When JB Monte is on the decrypting file system or extracting system files, the Mac hard locks. Mouse won’t move. Computer won’t sleep. Must force off by holding power button. IMO this is a broken release of redsn0w

It does not work for iphone 3gs…Read the directions man. It should work on the iPad. I have not tested it my self since i sold my iPad. I did this on my iPhone 4 and it works fine.

Francisco…try restoring to a fresh copy and then using the beta…Or wait a few more days..we should have another beta out that does not require 4.2b3 SHSH. It will require 4.1 shsh instead.

I think you just jailbroke it untethered.
Start RedSn0w again, and this time you just choose to start the iPad untethered.
That is what happened for me – but I’m a first timer.
Now I am waiting for Cydia to stop saying TSS request pending.

I am glad it worked for you. I tried to make it very simple for beginners to understand as well. I jailbroke a new iPhone 4 a few days ago and it took it like 4 days to finally say SHSH 4.3. It should go much faster now.

Just wanted to point out the new Greenp0ison only works on 4.2.1 not for the new (4.3)
