According to the report, the total worldwide sales of Mobile devices crossed 440.5 million units (of which 115 million were Smartphones) in the third quarter of 2011, which is up 5.6% from the same period last year. The major reason for this is expected to be the rising demand of low-cost and dual-SIM phones in emerging markets. The Smartphone sales have also grown by 42% over the year.

Talking about the ranking of various companies on the basis of total sales in 3rd Quarter of 2011, Nokia was seen leading the pack with a market share of 23.9%, followed by Samsung, LG and Apple. Check the table below for more details:

Samsung holds the numero uno position when we talk about Smartphones sales, with sales of more than 24 million units in the last year. This success is seen because of its strong Galaxy range of Smartphones which cater to people from nearly all Market segments. Apple iPhone sales took a small beating as a result of its new product announcement in October. It is expected to strengthen its position during the last quarter of 2011.

Coming to the Smartphone Operating Systems, Android Sales were reported to be 52.5% of the total Smartphone sales making it a distant leader ahead of Symbian and iOS. It came as a shock that the Windows Phone Operating System took the last spot in recognized Smartphone OSs, even behind Samsung’s Bada OS. iOS sales decreased as people were waiting for the new iPhone to be launched in October. RIM sales took a beating in US where it went down to as low as just 10%.

Sony has sold 2.5 lakh Notebooks in the 2010 Financial year and aims at selling upto 5 lakh units in the current year. For achieving this goal Rs. 50 crore have been alloted towards the marketing activities.

Sony has already achieved 15% market share in the Indian market when it comes to VAIO laptops, but they expect it to reach the 20% mark by the end of this financial year.

Microsoft has incorporated SkyDrive in Windows Phone Mango, so the Office documents and photos will be synchronized. From now, when you use a Windows Phone to take a picture then you can upload it SkyDrive or set it to automatically sync.

While in iCloud when you click a photo on iPhone then, it is pushed to your iPod touch, iPad, iMac, etc automatically while in Windows phone you have to upload it and then use the web app to download it. Quite similar concept but with a twist!

In other updates, you can even upload documents from Office straight up from a click of the button. Also included in the update is a new hub for Skydrive in the phone itself, which will make it easier for end users to access their photos and documents.

The report suggests that the global mobile network traffic will increase by 33x over the next ten years, thus reaching 127 EB in 2020. Forecasts are made in the mobile network licensed spectrum.

The strongest growth will take place in Europe and the West European mobile traffic will increase by 67 times to reach about 12,540 TB everyday. As for mobile voice traffic, its growth won’t vary much.

Other trends forecasted for the 2010-2020 period are:

• Sales for Tablets, Smartphones, M2Ms, dongles etc will grow.
• Social Networking traffic will increase and create new patterns of consumption.
• TV consumption will grow and video will become the main traffic engine in streaming and downloads.

The report is based on previous studies analyzing smartphone and social networking via mobile devices. It shows similar conclusions to the 2005 UMTS Forum that predicted a 27x growth when app stores and smartphone and 3G dongles had not reached mass availability.

Jean-Pierre Bienaimé, UMTS Forum Chairman says that the report reflects “ever-increasing consumer demand for mobile broadband services“. He adds that the report is useful when it comes to discussing sufficient spectrum availability able to support the growth.

“Mobile traffic forecasts 2010-2020″ will be one of the key elements at the World Radio communication Conferences to come where radio-frequency spectrum regulations are discussed.

UMTS Forum Chairman also stated that the effort the International Telecommunication Union has made in the International Mobile Telecommunication which led to the mobile broadband success, would have to continue so as to create ITU-R framework changes able to meet traffic demand in the next decade.

The company informed that their next generation payments solutions will combine the security and reliability that Visa’s point-of-sale payments offer with Digital eCommerce, Mobile and Social Networking Commerce.

Visa will introduce the digital wallet in countries with strong epayments infrastructure and developed mobile networks. The Wallet will support NFC payments via the Visa payWave app, store Visa and non-Visa payment accounts. It will also support various transaction services like Micropayments, person-to-person payment, eCommerce etc.

Visa’s Digital Wallet is supported by many important financial establishments such as: Card Services for Credit Unions (CSCU), Pentagon Federal Credit Union, Regions Bank, Royal Bank of Canada, US Bank etc.

US and Canadian users can expect to put their hands on the Digital Wallet this autumn.

The wallet could include the following features:

• Click-to-buy: User can buy products online by entering only an email address and password, the account number and expiration date (One-Click)
• Cross-channel payments solution: The wallet operates with various Visa and non-Visa payments account in various payment environments
• Merchant offers: Users can chose to receive discounts and promotions from merchants that support Visa digital wallet

Visa will adapt their Digital Wallet services to each market. For example, they will try to encourage Russians and Indians to use their Credit Cards more often and will work with African authorities to develop the electronic payment infrastructure.

Google has lost its title as the world’s most valuable brand in 2010 to Apple but it is Facebook that has been reported as the fastest growing brand. Facebook has an upswing of 246% and was thus registered in Millward Brown’s BrandZ Top 100 for the first time. The company ranked 35th in the top with a $19.2 billion in brand value!

Facebook was followed by Baidu (141% growth) which had a $22.6 billion brand value. Wells Fargo came third (97% brand value increase) with $36.9 billion, Burberry came fourth (86% increase) with $3.4 billion and Apple took the fifth place (84% growth) and had the highest brand value ($153.3 billion).

Scott Sorokin from Mindshare stated that brands no longer controlled the game nowadays since they could not determine all circumstances they operated in. “Brands, historically, have managed the assets they have made in places that they own, but the future will belong to brands that manage assets that they don’t make, in places that they don’t own, like Facebook, Twitter, Social Media, etc”, he said.

Stephen Yap, Group Director for TNS stated that the rise of Facebook was just amazing. Facebook has now surpassed its initial social network role and has become a binder for communication and entertainment activities. It is turning into the main platform for consumer technology activities such as chatting, watching videos or playing games.

The Internet seems to face a new boom, as all we see around us is billions and billions. Most of the technology products that we see, from Apple, Samsung, Nokia and Google’s Android are mainly oriented on the online field. We need not look farther than today, when Microsoft has concluded the deal on Skype’s acquiring. Obviously, they are doing so in order to compete against Google Voice and FaceTime. All the competition that we currently see is slowly, but surely pushing the Internet towards the second bubble! (When do you think will it burst?)

We think Nokia should have a single reference point to beat, which is iPad 2. This device has already cornered nearly 75% of the market and is the best sold tablet!

Stephen Elop, Nokia’s CEO stated in an interview for a Finnish TV station that Nokia was preparing to revolutionize the tablet world with a brand new product which would be better than the 200 tablets already available in the market.

He said, “There are now over 200 different tablets on the marketplace, only one of them is doing really well. And, my challenge to the team is I don’t wanna be the 201st tablet on the market that you can’t tell from all of the others. We have to take a uniquely Nokia prospective and so the teams are working very hard on something that would be differentiating relative to everything else that’s going on in the market.”

On being questioned about Nokia being in a hurry to launch its new Tablet, he said “We’re always in a hurry to do the right things!”

As you already know, Nokia has signed a deal with Microsoft for the manufacturing of Nokia smartphones able to run Windows Phone 7. The question is: Will the new tablet have the same operating system?

Stephen Elop says that the engineering teams are currently testing tablets operated by: Windows Phone 7, Meego and Windows Next (Windows Phone 7 tablet version) According to him, Nokia is going take a decision about the operating system they are going to use for their next tablet in the near future. Unfortunately, things are not going that great for Nokia because the company announced they were going to fire 7000 employees a few days ago. Stephen Elop has begun a long restructuring programme in the company.

We just hope everything goes fine according to the plan for Nokia and we have some more competition and options in the Tablets market!

Now, however, they are beginning to think about it again as Milestone 1 of the upcoming Windows 8 OS by Microsoft has been leaked on the Internet. Torrent based file sharing sites have it under a filename that suggests that this is the real deal.As a matter of fact it is so!

Microsoft has been trying to maintain somewhat secrecy about its current development of this new OS. Maybe that is why they are bothered and annoyed by this leak. But they are not being way too concerned as an analysis of the actual file being distributed suggests that this Milestone 1 is from September 22, 2010.

Being a distribution this old, the Milestone 1 is not much capable and also, not fully packed with features that will be available on Windows 8 according to the latest rumours. But sources have confirmed the distribution to be fully functional.

It is the original product as the legitimate sources claimed upon testing the product themselves. Microsoft is quite worried that this leaked product will spread like epidemic and cause major piracy concern for the company.

It is quite a crucial state for the upcoming OS from Microsoft that is expected to have a lot of built-in features making it more complete as a package, kind of like the Linux distributions. Only one thing that is making Microsoft happy at this moment is the fact that this old version does not have the built-in PDF reader and SmartScreen file checking and some other features announced and added recently!
